We’re continuing our Leadership Spotlight: Meet the New Faces of MSD Warren Township series with someone who may be a familiar face to many in our community! We're excited to introduce Mrs. Courtney Smith, the new principal at Grassy Creek Elementary School.

While this may be a new position, Mrs. Smith is no stranger to Warren Township. She’s a proud Warren Central graduate and has dedicated her career to serving the students, staff, and families of our district. From the classroom to school leadership, she’s built strong relationships and a deep passion for education that continues to guide her work.

“I grew up in a family of educators, so from an early age, I saw the powerful impact teachers and school leaders can have—not just on students, but on entire families,” she shared. “That foundation inspired me to pursue a career where I could build meaningful relationships and create positive change.”

After graduating from Warren Central in 2006, Smith earned her bachelor's degree in education from IUPUI and later received her master’s in educational leadership from Purdue University. She began her teaching career in 2011 at Raymond Park Intermediate Middle School and later taught at Pleasant Run Elementary. For the past seven years, she served as the Assistant Principal at Pleasant Run, where she focused on supporting student success and strengthening school culture.

Smith says, "Over time, I discovered that my passion extended beyond the classroom. I was drawn to school leadership because it allows me to support not only students but also teachers and families on a larger scale." Now stepping into the role of principal at Grassy Creek, she’s excited to be a part of a school family that is deeply committed to student success.

csGoals and Future Initiatives

As principal, Smith is focused on continuing the work to raise student achievement and improve attendance. She’s committed to creating a school environment where everyone feels connected—students, staff, and families alike. One initiative she plans to continue emphasizing is Warren’s Strive for 5 attendance initiative.

“When students are at school consistently, we see improvements not only in academics but also in behavior and engagement,” she said. “Partnering with families to remove barriers and promote consistent attendance is key to helping our students thrive.”

When asked what brings her the most joy in school leadership, her answer was simple:

“I find joy in bringing people together and helping every student feel seen, supported, and capable of success,” she said.

We’re thrilled to welcome Mrs. Courtney Smith to the Home of the Prospectors, Grassy Creek Elementary!
